Sandcastle Competition

On Sunday Debbie and went to the 27th Annual U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition in Imperial Beach. Debbie is sort of the Ambassador of Greater San Diego. If something fun is happening Debbie knows about it and is gathering a group of friends to go enjoy the event.

On the way to the festival we took a detour to visit ComicCon. ComicCon was a complete madhouse in a good way. I'm not a fan of the graphic novels or SciFi, but next year I'm definitely going to ComicCon. Of course, I'll need some sort of costume. I may even invent my own Superheroine and Superpowers for the event.

After the visit to ComicCon, we were off to the Sand Castle Competition. There are amateur and professional classes of competitors and there are 2 person and 10 person teams. Perhaps you're wondering how you get to be a professional Sand Castle Builder; I'm wondering too, but I couldn't find an answer. The teams have 5 hours to build, then a few hours later the tide washes it all back into the Pacific.

Some of the castles weren't castles at all; it was more like sand sculptures. The competitors had built full scenes out of sand and water and sometimes a bit of food coloring. Sand Octopuses, Sand Dolphins, Sand Penguins - you name it, someone had sculpted it. There was one sand sculpture that had some of the big landmarks of California. That sculpture was truly awesome. Another team created a giant wedding cake. During the judging two people hopped on top of the cake and got married - for real! That's commitment to winning the competition.

My favorite entry was a parody of Mt. Rushmore. Before I even got close to it, I knew it was my favorite since it had its own crowd control. Outside of the sculpture, the team had roped off a walkway with arrows and signs to route you from the front of the sculpture to the back. It was a goofy idea and it was beautifully executed.

The builders of the Mount Rushmore sculpture were some funny guys. They were kind enough to pose for a photo with me and my enormous sun hat. That hat is wider than my shoulders. You can move me to Southern California, but you can't make me tan.

Iron Girl 10K

If you ever need an example of how to run an event, then you should attend one of the Iron Girl races. I've been to Junior League Balls that weren't as polished and organized. At the start the event organizers spoke and said that since this was the inaugural event they hoped for 500-600 participants. Instead they had 1300. When your event more than doubles in size lots of things can become problems, but there wasn't any part of the event that was poorly done.

Race number pick up was quick; the start was organized; the course was well managed - those are the basics of any race. There were other things that made it exceptional. All the water was fresh bottled Arrowhead water - not the skunky water that sometimes shows up on courses. There were volunteers walking the course handing out Luna bars, band-aids and (thank you!) tissues. Every participant had her name printed in big letters on her race number - so as you looped past another racer you could call out support to them. I love cheering for people and I had a great time doing that.

The other thing that I really, really appreciated is that the entire course stayed open for all the participants. In a 5K/10K, most walkers pick the 5K option. That means, that when I'm finishing the 10K I'm near the end of the pack even if I'm walking a quick pace. Everything was still available - water stations, course munchies - everything. Lots of events start breaking down the aid stations well before the course time limit which leaves slower competitors/walkers without much support. There's nothing as disheartening as walking by an aid station that's already closed.

As I passed by someone on toward the end, I cheered her on a bit. She mumbled that this was her first ever finish. She looked tired - not as tired as I looked at the end of Rock and Roll Marathon mind you. As I walked by the last water station and the finish line, I told the volunteers that this was her first 10K finish. Those volunteers completely cheered her on. After the finish, I stopped to stretch and all of the finish line volunteers had made a tunnel for her to run through and get high fives. At the end of the race, there was a full catered breakfast from Elijah's. It was good stuff too: breakfast burritos, blintzes, pasteries, fresh fruit, yogurt, coffee and all types of juice. Plus, they had tables and chairs set up so you could enjoy the meal.

Before the race, I ran into some TNT Teammates from Rock-N-Roll marathon. They are taking this TNT session off, and it was nice to see them. They did the 5k, but waited to cheer for me on the 10K course. That was very, very sweet and I was so happy that they did that.

My knee wasn't entirely cooperative and it was an incredibly humid day, but I still felt that I had a good pace - 13:52/mile average and a faster pace for each mile. I'd like to be able to maintain about a 14 minute mile for the entire Nike Marathon event.

Take A Dip

Missed my knee rehab appointment due to horrendous traffic on the 5.

When I finally got home and decided to go swim laps - my first trip to the pool since moving to San Diego. As a kid, I spent entire summers at the community pool. My mom's office was across the street and overlooked the pool. Every year she made me buy a neon colored swimsuit so that she could look out her office window and make sure I wasn't swimming in the deep end. Clever! My dad generally went to pool with us on the weekends, but my Mom often took me back to the pool after dinner during the work week. (In retrospect, my Dad had a more physical job so he was probably tired.) Those evenings at the pool with my mother are incredibly happy memories.

I swam competitively for years. My theory is that most competitive swimmers have vivid imaginations. Otherwise swimming lap after lap is excruciatingly boring. There's no iPod, no one to talk to, no distractions. Swimmers have to manufacture their own amusements. On the other hand, I was never all that fast and maybe if I had focused on my form I would have improved. Luckily I swam butterfly and IM, since there are so few girls in those events I did pretty well.

As I was lumbering up and down the pool this evening, it stuck me that this pool is a lot like the one in my imagination - palm trees, perfect temperature. I'm even allowed to swim in the deep end if I want. It was much more enjoyable than the 5 mile walk I had planned.

On The Road Again

Surprise! I'm back in Pasadena.

Monday I got a phone call asking me to drive to Pasadena for a meeting Tuesday morning. There is no way to make it from San Diego to Pasadena for an 8 a.m. meeting. Actually, there probably is a way but it would involve getting on the road at 3 a.m. So it's more accurate to say there's no way for me to make the trip; I like my sleep too much. I need to drive in the night before the meeting.

I noticed that in the next few weeks the start time of the Saturday TNT training sessions changes from a nutty 7 a.m. to a completely insane 6:30 a.m. I've never missed a training session to sleep in, but I think a 6:30 start time may be my breaking point. I just don't see me getting into my car to drive to training at 6.

Today's drive was on a much more acceptable schedule. I had to work all day today so I didn't get on the road until 8 p.m. Actually, that's better than leaving earlier because I avoided Los Angeles traffic. Last week the last 20 miles of the drive were in L.A. rush hour - that 20 miles took as long as the first 90 miles. GRRR! Tonight the drive was pretty relaxing and my incredibly patient mom kept me company on the phone - of course, she's on the East Coast so she stayed up until nearly 1 a.m EDT chatting with me. She won't be getting up early either.

Arrived in Pasadena, checked in, hopped into the resort's hot tub for a few minutes, ordered a fabulous dessert for dinner and ate half. (If you want to drool this is what I had - Candied Apple and Croissant Bread Pudding with Cognac Ice Cream and Caramel Sauce. Wow!) Tomorrow the plan is get up, check out, go to the meeting for 3 hours, immediately drive back to San Diego and hopefully arrive in time for my physical therapy appointment.

What's missing? What's missing? Oh, yes. My workout. That's the bugger of being on the road - there's no time to squeeze in a workout. In fact, there's not time to squeeze in anything - I'd have liked to have visited Carrie or Linda, but a 13 trip doesn't allow for that.

Fresh!

A photo of my niece's brand-new baby girl, Desi. She's a big, healthy baby - almost 9 pounds. My niece and the baby are doing fabulously well.

Yes, my niece is having children before I am. Apparently, I was skipped by the thing where the women in my family fall in love and have children early.

This snapshot was taken the morning she was born. She still has that new baby look. Desi was born on my Dad's birthday. I was also born on my Grandfather's birthday - so we have some sort of shared birthday coincidence/tradition going on in my family.

I can't wait to go home and meet her. Welcome to the world Desi - your family is crazy in love with you.

Randomness

  • Two weeks of business travel- great cities, but still exhausting. How did I ever survive the job when I had to travel every single week?
  • Last Saturday's training session wasn't terribly fun for me. It was beautiful location, but my knee was pretty achy which made the last 6 miles difficult. I did go to physical therapy on Monday. It wasn't fun and it hurt a bit, but my knee felt pretty good the rest of the week.
  • Working out gives my brain a rest time to put things in perspective. This week I had to confront so truly disappointing behavior from people. Some sneaker time gave me a chance to relax and forgive.

Decisions

My pal Zeke came by my office and suggested the I run the Iron Girl 10K with him. He's a marathon/medal junkie - and the Iron Girl has a very cool finishers medal.

It turns out that men aren't allowed to participate in the Iron Girl. I don't agree with that. It's good to a have athletic events that empower women, but I don't see excluding the penis-bearers as empowering to women. It just seems dumb to me, but apparently it works for lots of women.

So Zeke isn't going to do Iron Girl, but he put the idea in my head. Now I'm torn on whether to my standard Team In Training session that Saturday or the Iron Girl.

Pro-TNT:
Training with my friends and training parters
Longer distance - 12 miles (TNT) versus 10K (Iron Girl)
Hill training which I'll need for the Nike marathon in October
TNT location is very close to my house; Iron Girl is 30 minutes away in Solano Beach
Can sleep later on that Saturday morning
Pancake breakfast after training - possibly at the Big Kitchen Cafe

Pro-Iron Girl
Cool event name
Niffy finishers medal
Great event jersey

I Lied

You're not late unless you arrive after I do. I'm always late - not terribly late, but pushing the outer limits of on-timeness. Our TNT training sessions officially start at 7 a.m., but we never leave for the walk/run until about 7:45. So I usually amble in at about 7:35. The downside of this lateness is that I never get good parking at training events. Normally I have spectacular Parkma (or Parking Karma), but when I get to training locations I expect to walk quite a bit. Today I parked nearly a mile into the trail, and I had to walk back to meet the team at the starting point.

Our training location was along the shores of The Big Bay starting at Spanish Landing, then a lap around Harbor Island, along the Embarcadero, past the Star of India tall ship, the U.S.S. Midway, and a spectacular view of downtown. Finally we walked into Seaport Village. Then we turned around and went back the same way. I love walking along the water; it's so breezy and comfortable. Sometimes I'm still happily surprised that I live by the beach. After being landlocked in Dallas for so long, living on the coast is glorious.

The official distance for today was 10 miles - plus that mile from the car (and back to it). My knee was really fine until about mile 9.5. Then it really, really hurt. When I started to have real pain my walking buddy Steve pointed to my car and said "hey, that's your car. You could stop." Remember when I said this: I'd love to complete the full 10 miles, but I'll stop if I can't do it without pain. I'll probably be pouty if I can't finish, but I will stop. Of course, I didn't do that. I insisted on finishing that final distance.

The total for today was close to 12 miles - nearly 10 of which were pain-free. I'll be on the couch with ice packs on my knees if you need me.

Found!

I'm sort of getting back to training, but mostly I've tried to rest my knees this week. I did some yoga, some Pilates, some light weight work for my upper body and some body weight work for my lower body. Also, I'm doing lots and lots of stretching.

Luckily, I found my favorite stretching book. Actually, my mom must have found it when she and my Dad were here in October helping me move into my house. Mom was kind enough to unpack and shelve tons of my books. Somehow she located my long missing (and sorely missed) copy of The Whartons' Stretch Book. I didn't even know she'd found it, but I checked the bookcase in hope that it had mysteriously appeared. And low and behold there it was. (Mom, please come back. I have more boxes.)

Tomorrow I'm going to try to do a light training session of 10 miles. I'll have my knee braces in case I need them, but I don't like to wear them because they cause an unsightly roll of thigh chub. We'll see how it goes. I'd love to complete the full 10 miles, but I'll stop if I can't do it without pain. I'll probably be pouty if I can't finish, but I will stop.

This Time I Didn't Get a Bracelet

Not such a great week for marathon training I have to admit. In fact, I've done absolutely nothing - Doctor's orders.

Last Saturday's trip to the ER was for a very painful knee. Actually, before I went to the ER I called the "Ask an RN" hotline for my insurance. The RN said, "Hmmm. Marathon? That's trauma. Go to the ER." When I got there, the doctor took a look at my chart and said, "Oh, you did a marathon. Overuse. Tx - Rest, Ice and Advil."

I was pretty sure it wasn't anything serious, but I went in for my follow up visit today. I'll be in Physical Therapy for the next few months. However, the doctor is confident that I can do the marathon in October.

Until I get the all clear from PT, it's cross training for me.
